Exclamation Electronic Sports League: Guild Wars Section

Hi all,

I would like to introduce the ESL GvG League section to you. Right now we have a clanwar league running, the so-called ESL Amateuer Series (EAS) where you have the chance to win nice prizes. You can get more info at http://www.esl.eu/eu/guildwars/8on8/eas/leagueinfo/ and http://www.esl.eu/eu/guildwars/news/76386/

But the real reason I am posting this is our new 1on1 cup which is starting soon. You can sign up at http://www.esl.eu/eu/guildwars/1on1/spring09/signup/ - there are still a few slots available. Participation is free of charge!

If you are new to the ESL, you may find our FAQ usefull http://www.esl.eu/eu/gettingstarted/

I hope you don't see my posting as spam, which it is not. I am just trying to inform you about out our GW leagues, which we are organizing with the official support of and in cooperation with NCSoft. I you have any questions, I am at your service.

Best Regards,
SlasH, ESL Community Manager

Shush mitch, that 1on1 cup owns.

Example:

http://www.esl.eu/eu/guildwars/1on1/...atch/12067030/

With preset standard build and equipment its more of a measure of player skill than the 4on4 or 8on8 build wars can sometimes be. Assuming equal server conditions.

edit: seen the spring cup rules this does have some form of build wars (Core + "Prophecies" - Skills) > above example and comment not accurate.

WTF is up with that build, do they pre-assign you a build in this?

Normally I'd expect to see like assacsters and [spinal shivers] necros but those are like prophecies beta default builds ?

Actually that makes it seem kind of fun, considering that GW 1v1 is usually not worth playing.

Not worth playing --> GW is so completely full of brutally cheap tactics which all have an easy counter, but there's no way to bring a counter / tactic for everything on an 8 slot bar, so one person will just get horribly slaughtered with no skill involved.

In a 4-8 person team you can get a balance of tactics spread between the team members, and a competetive meta develops.

At least with nothing on the bar but [sever artery][gash][final thrust], the person who clicks buttons faster wins.

I used to be an accomplished 1v1 player in a game called Neverwinter Nights, but there we had established duelling rules and you could use all the skills your character knew, not just 8, therefore it was easier to counter / play a wider variety of techniques.

Not to rant, I just hate GW 1v1, probably from having to /ignore so many noobs who I know will just own me with hexes.

1v1 is build wars. Might as well just have each person pick eight skills then a judge tell them who won.

It's like rock paper scissors except I'm good at rock paper scissors.

Not that I haven't had some decent warrior duels, but after you go warrior + no defy pain you're starting to standardize it which is what you'd need for it to be fun.

"In order to ensure fairness we have decided that both players of a match need to play with the same class and build."

Plus its only warrior, ele, and mes duels. But do you just have to agree on a build with your opponent or is one given?

this would be alright if the predetermined builds are picked VERY, VERY carefully. for example, you can't stick a generic pvp warrior build in there, because they are all tailored for fighting against a moving opponent in a group setting. a duel between two such warriors will just be a straight up slugfest.

That just means the person with the most sundering, HCT and HSR procs will win unless one of the 2 players is much better than the other.

1v1 in guild wars is just bad and boring.

Which would actually be awesome... if all you were allowed to use was shock axe/ primal rage sword I'd be first in line. (though dev hammer would own both)

Duels would be about 10 seconds.
